A House on The Rock: Matthew 7
Today we come to the conclusion of the Sermon on the Mount where Jesus touches on various topics that might be summarized as traits of true believers: Christians are those who are not quick to pass judgment, yet are judicious. They are prayerfully expectant of their heavenly father as well as respecters of persons. Followers of Jesus take the difficult path of obedience and are wary of those who claim Christ yet who bear no fruit. These things along with everything else that has already been expounded on in this sermon paints for us a picture of Christian discipleship. The Christian life is not marked by extraordinary abilities, but by faith and obedience. And these are marks; signs that point to God’s work within our hearts. We bear fruit of faith and obedience because we are known by Christ. Our standing then is sure – it is not built on our gifts or even by our obedience; rather our standing before Christ is built on Christ himself who is our Rock. We are called simply to trust and obey.
How have you viewed the Christian life? What would it look like for you to trust and obey?
